The Basics of Kitchen Remodeling
![]() |
The center of activity in every home is the kitchen. It is the place where everyone gathers to prepare food, talk, and enjoy life together. At least that is the way life is supposed to be. Is your kitchen a pleasant place where everyone wants to spend time or is your kitchen the last place on earth anyone wants to be? Is your kitchen old-fashioned and screaming, "I am a relic from the sixties." If the answer to any of these questions is yes, you might want to consider updating your kitchen. I know the remodeling word can scare you to death, but remodeling does not have to spell disaster if you prepare, organize, and research. You need to know what you want and don't settle for anything else. When all is said and done, you will have your dream kitchen where even Ozzie and Harriet would be happy to visit.
There are numerous reasons as to why you might want to consider kitchen remodeling. Perhaps you need more space in your kitchen, or maybe there are aspects of the room that just need updating. Still another reason for kitchen renovation is to add value to your home. No matter why you want to make changes, here are some basic tips and information to help you get started.
The first thing you will want to do before starting your remodeling project is to thoroughly evaluate your kitchen and make sure you clearly understand your desires. You may also want to take a look at some modern trends in kitchen design. One such trend is the use of multiple work stations to provide more counter space and allow for more efficient activity in the kitchen. A popular method of counter space is with the addition of an island. An island is a free-standing, rectangular-shaped structure with countertop space and cabinet storage. It's even possible to add a sink or stove top to your kitchen island.
Cabinets are most common area of the kitchen where many homeowners decide to make changes. You can pick standard cabinets orchoose to have custom cabinets built and installed. Custom cabinets are exactly what they sound like -- cabinets that are custom built to fit your kitchen. When it comes to cabinet styles, there are two primary choices in design. The European-style cabinets are frameless, while face-framed cabinets are just what they say - framed. The materials that your custom cabinets are built from can include various quality woods such as oak, pine, cherry or maple. If you have cabinets that are crafted from a fine hardwood you might want to refinish them instead of replacing them. Cabinet refinishing simply involves stripping the existing down to the wood and restaining and varnishing. Some people also like to replace the cabinate hardware for a different look. While you can hire a contractor to refinish your cabinets many homeowners choose to do the job themselves.
Another major area where homeowners make changes are the countertops. If you have unsightly or low quality Formica you should definitely consider changing it to a more durable and attractive material. Granite is one of the more popular materials for kitchen countertops because of its smooth beauty and lasting durability.
Another surface that you may want to change is the floor. If your kitchen floor is old and damaged consider installing beautiful, durable laminate flooring. Laminate flooring is easy to install, is duable and comes in a variety of attractive colors and textures.
